This song is written for my 15 year old daughter. It carries a message of encouragement for all young women to follow the unique path that is laid out before them, and to stand strong, like our tribal mountain, Aoraki.

Kia Mataara

E hine, kia mataara
E hine, kia maia
Ko te timataka, noa x2

Kua tipu koe, hai uha
Poroakihia to hineka
kai konei to(nu)
te kera
kai konei mo ake to(nu)
te kera

whakakoia to hinekaro
Me he arero taiaha
Naia to kaha x2

Whaia te huanui
Tika mohou tonu e
Whaia te iti kahuraki
Noho matatu
me Aoraki

Translation of Kia Mataara

Be ready, girl
Be brave
This is only the beginning

You have grown
And left your girlhood behind
But the girl is still there
The girl will always be
With you, forever

Sharpen your mind
Like the tongue of the taiaha
This is your strength, your mind is your strength
Follow the unique path
That is stretched out before you
Strive to reach the greatest heights
Stand strong, like Aoraki

NB. Aoraki – Mt Cook is the ancestral mountain of Kai Tahu (the South Island tribe I belong to)
